General
What does Alama do?
Alama marks written exam answers. It reads handwritten or typed responses, scores them point by point against your marking scheme and explains every mark. Answers it is unsure about go to a teacher before results are released.
Does Alama replace teachers or examiners?
No. Alama does the first pass so teachers spend their time on the answers that need judgement. A teacher or examiner always approves the final result.
Can it read real student handwriting?
Alama is built for everyday school handwriting, including joined writing, crossed-out words and answers that run into the margin. When writing is too unclear to read confidently, the answer is flagged for a person.
Who makes Alama?
Alama is built by Datatechniques Limited, a technology company in Lagos registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission.
Marking & AI
Which subjects and question types does it support?
Short answers, structured theory questions and essays in subjects with a written marking scheme. During the pilot we are starting with Biology and English and adding subjects as we test them.
How accurate is Alama?
We measure accuracy by how often Alama’s marks agree with experienced human examiners. Our pilot target is 90% agreement in the first subject, and we will publish results as we have them.
What happens when Alama gets a mark wrong?
Teachers can change any mark. Every change is recorded and helps us improve future marking.
Is Alama biased toward neat handwriting?
Alama marks the content of an answer, not its appearance. Where handwriting can’t be read confidently, a person decides the mark instead of the AI guessing.
Data & privacy
Who owns the scripts and results?
Your institution does. We process scripts only to provide marking and, with your permission, to improve accuracy.
Where is data stored?
Scripts and results are stored securely in the cloud, or kept on-site with Alama Edge. See the privacy policy for details.
Do you follow Nigerian data protection law?
Yes. We handle personal data in line with the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023.
Pricing & pilot
How much does it cost?
The school pilot is free. After the pilot, schools pay a flat fee per student per term, and universities pay per script. See the pricing page for details.
Is the pilot really free?
Yes. Pilot schools pay nothing for the pilot period. In return we ask for feedback and permission to use anonymised scripts to improve accuracy.
What counts as a student for school pricing?
Each student whose scripts are marked during a term. Unlimited internal tests and exams are included for that student.
How do we join the pilot?
Email us from the pilot page with your school’s name, location and the subjects you’d like to test.
