Handwritten marking

Marking for the handwriting students actually write.

Alama reads joined writing, print, crossed-out words and answers that run into the margin, then marks them against your scheme.

How handwritten marking works in Alama

The details that make it work in real schools.

Built for real scripts

Alama is trained to handle everyday school writing, not neat printed text. Each page is read in context, so a messy word is understood from the sentence around it. It covers joined and printed handwriting, crossed-out and inserted words, answers continued in margins or on extra sheets and numbered and lettered sub-parts.

Marked point by point

Once an answer is read, Alama compares it with each point in your marking scheme and awards partial credit where the scheme allows it. Alternative answers you accept are counted too.

Honest about what it can’t read

If a word is too unclear to read confidently, Alama doesn’t guess. The answer is flagged with the unclear part highlighted, and a teacher decides the mark.

Common questions

About handwritten marking.

Does Alama work with scanned or photographed scripts?

Both. A phone photo taken in the app works well, and batch scanners are supported for larger volumes.

What if a student writes outside the lines?

Alama reads the whole page, including margins and extra sheets attached to the script.

Can it read diagrams?

Alama can read labels on simple diagrams. Drawn diagrams that need visual judgement are flagged for a teacher.
